St. Michael the Archangel
In Hebrew, the name Michael means "one who is like God". The archangels are seen as messengers, or manifestations, of God.
St. Michael was known as the protector of soldiers; and in the middles ages, Michael became the patron saint of Christian Knights. He was seen as the protector of Israel, and as a source of comfort and strength for the people when they were in extreme circumstances.
St. Michael's feast day of September 29th was joined with that of Gabriel and Raphael to commemorate all the guardian angels.
St. Michael is always imaged holding the sword, indicating he is a protector; and in St. Angela's stained glass window he is further imaged holding a symbol of the Church, to signify his role as the Protector of the Universal Church.
The choice of St. Michael the Archangel was likely due to the namesake for St. Angela's second pastor, Fr. Michael Stevenson, who designed most of the church. This window of St. Michael matches and balances that of St. Angela on the other side of the church. Angela is the patroness of education, and he, Michael, is the patron of those who protect others. This window of St. Michael was donated by Fr. Stevenson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael and Margaret Stevenson.
